Sewing Flowers

Well folks...here it is...my first sewn on card, goofs and all!! I felt so successful the other night on my scraps that I dove right into a card yesterday. I found this fun paper at Joannes so I set out to sew it to a layer of taken with teal card stock. The paper is thinner which must have made the difference because the tension was wrong and the thread kept gathering on the backside. When I added a layer of celery it went much better. You can see the all the holes I created along the right side but there was no way I was going to pitch it after all my efforts. I had to adjust the stitch length as well so upon close inspection you can see different looking stitches. I also wanted to try the zig zag stitch so I sewed the stems that way. That piece I did have to do twice because the zags were too far apart the first time. Looking at the finished card I think I should have done all the stitching in brown thread. Next time. I used my Cuttlebug die cut to create the flowers. The middle layer on both is card stock covered chipboard for added dimension. I used the leaf from PaperTrey's Green Thumb set and the hello from the Papertray set. For my first attempt I am pleased and I didn't even lose too many hairs over it, LOL!!
Greg returns later today from Flower City Work Camp. I was hoping to find you a link to one of the news interviews he did but no luck. FCWC takes place during spring break and kids from all over Rochester come to work on homes in the city for those who are financially or physically unable to do so themselves. There are 500 kids plus loads of adult volunteers from more than 40 different churches working on about 50 different homes throughout the city. They paint, do light construction and repairs, flooring and more. My FIL is on a site where they are building a wheelchair ramp for a lady. She has not been able to take her chair outside, or at least not with much assistance, so this will make her life so much easier. The kids stay at 2 different churches, sleeping on floors and having awesome group worship times at night. The camp is in its 21st year. Greg has served in many capacities over the years including camp speaker, chef, program and for the last two years as director. I love this camp because it is such a wonderful example of community done well. I am looking forward to his return and all the stories he has to tell.
Thanks for stopping!

oh Wow!! I love the card ... and think it turned out great. The few extra holes in the side are not bad at all. Oh it's so pretty. I am anxious to get moved and unpack my studio things and get my machine set up. I have one of those little mini machines but the tension thing keeps fighting me and I can't seem to get it right ... you have so inspired me, maybe I'll try that little mini thing again!

It turned out FANTASTIC!!! LOL...I wouldn't have even noticed or paid attention to your goof with the stitching had you not pointed it out. I would have thought you meant to do that! That would be my story if it were me...
Thanks for sharing! I think I should pull out my sewing machine, dust it off, give this a go!

I think your card is awesome. The extra stitching holes just add a distressed look to your card. I haven't ventured into sewing cards - but I might have to try it out. I never though of using the zig stitch for a stem, how clever!

WOW!! LOVE THE STITCHING!! I just found Julia's post about sewing on cards...I want a sewing machine so bad now. Your card is awesome. Really adds a lot to the card! That'so great that the kids help out others like that on their Spring break. They will remember that for a long time! Hopefully they will continue with it.
